A CLEANER and kitchen supervisor have both been praised in recognition of their 'amazing work'.

Julieta Sarno, a housekeeper based at the Western Community Hospital in Southampton, and Madalina Farcau, who manages the kitchen at Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton, were both praised at the Solent NHS Estates and Facilities staff awards.

Julieta became the first person to receive a new award for being a truly outstanding member of staff.

The award has been introduced as part of National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day; an initiative aimed at raising the profile of NHS roles that are crucial but behind the scenes.

Julieta has worked for Solent NHS Trust since March 2021 and played an important role at both the Western Community Hospital and the Royal South Hants, covering many shifts while staff were off with sickness.

Julieta said: “I just do my job. I love my work; it is like family to me. I do my best to make things perfect to keep everyone safe.”

Her mornings are spent washing patient clothing in the hospital laundry before cleaning wards in the afternoon.

In recent months, she has helped out cleaning a council-run day centre on top of her day job.

She was presented with a framed certificate, gift voucher and flowers.

Madalina, known as Madi, joined Solent NHS Trust as a hostess in 2017 and worked her way up to become a hostess supervisor in April 2020.

Catering bosses said Madi’s insight and guiding vision had gained her the respect and admiration of staff, who felt comfortable sharing work or personal issues with her. In return, staff felt more supported, respected and engaged.

At the beginning of the pandemic, she played a leading role in setting up the kitchens of the two Covid wards which were created in Southampton.

“I am very excited and shocked to receive this,” she said. “I enjoy my job and always think if I can keep the team happy, it will rub off on the patients and they will be happy too.”
