A MATTRESS, golf clubs and piles of dirty clothes have been dumped in Southampton woodland.

The piles of filth left tipped in Lordswood Woods were discovered by members of the public near Coxford Road.

They alerted police in the area to the haul of rubbish.

A spokesperson from the force said: "On Saturday, Southampton Neighbourhood Police Team West collaborated with Country Watch to conduct joint patrols in Lordswood.

"While driving in the woodland, members of the public approached us to report fly-tipping.

"Fly-tipping is a criminal offence with significant penalties available to the courts when the perpetrators are identified. The maximum fine for fly-tipping is £50,000."
