A SOUTHAMPTON road has been closed after a sinkhole opened up in the middle of the street.

A section of Wilton Avenue is currently closed between Coventry Road and Devonshire Road. 

Motorists are being asked to plan ahead due to the sinkhole which has opened up in the centre of the road just off the junction with Devonshire Road. 

A barrier has been set up around the site with cones cordoning off the area.

A diversion has also been put in place. 

In a tweet, Southampton City Council's highways team said the road had been shut for "for urgent subsidence investigations".

"We will issue further updates as they become available, but please plan any journeys around the area accordingly."

It is not known when the road will be fixed and reopened.
