A MAN in his 70s has been taken to hospital after getting trapped in a car following a crash on the M27.

Emergency services were called to the exit slip road at Junction 8 eastbound after a Lexus left the road and ended up in a ditch.

The driver, a man in his 70s, remained trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters shortly after 10am.

He suffered injuries to his head, chest and arm.

After being treated at the scene by paramedics, the man was taken to University Hospital Southampton by road ambulance in a serious but stable condition.

Fire crews from Redbridge, Hightown and St Mary’s attended the crash alongside Hampshire police and paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Both lanes of the exit slip road were closed for a few hours and at the height of the incident, heavy delays were building.

The road reopened at around 2.10pm and traffic is moving freely.
