A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of common assault after travellers arrived at a Southampton park.

Police were called to Southampton Common at 12.27pm on Monday following reports that a man had been assaulted.

A 35-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been arrested on suspicion of common assault and remains in police custody.

It comes after a number of caravans were seen parked on Southampton Common.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are aware of an unauthorised encampment on Southampton Common which began this afternoon (June 27) and our officers have attended the site to assess the situation.

"We have been working closely with Southampton City Council to seek a suitable resolution and the encampment has now left the site."

A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said: “Southampton City Council has been made aware of an unauthorised encampment on The Common.

"Our Community Safety Team have spoken with the Neighbourhood Policing Team responsible for the area and police are currently in attendance.

“The Community Safety Team will work closely with partners to conduct wellbeing and safety checks in the encampment and to safely resolve the situation minimising any impact on the community.

"Advice to the community is being disseminated to report any criminality or anti-social behaviour to the police on 101.”
