A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Southampton.

The 30-year-old died yesterday morning following a disturbance in Cranbury Terrace.

He was found with serious injuries and taken to Southampton General Hospital where he later died.

Officers investigating the suspected murder just before 4am have arrested a 38-year-old man.

Below is what we know so far on the incident and the police investigation.

What happened?

Hampshire police were called to Cranbury Terrace, off Onslow Road, at 3.58am on Wednesday to reports of a disturbance.

Officers attended within a few minutes and found a man on the ground with serious injuries.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he died soon after arriving.

A 38-year-old Southampton man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and assault by beating of an emergency worker.

Police have clarified the man who died was not an emergency worker.

The assault involved a detention officer and took place after the man was brought into custody yesterday morning, police say.

The detention officer was kicked by the man but the attack was not serious.

No details have been revealed so far on how the man died and whether any weapons have been used.

What do residents say?

A number of residents in Cranbury Terrace and nearby Cranbury Place say they are "in shock" after what happened.

"It's usually such a quiet neighbourhood," said Natasha Brown, who lives a few doors down from the scene.

"Something like this is quite serious. It's quite scary.

"I think everybody is in shock."

The 45-year-old says she doesn't go out much anyway but incidents like this "make you anxious to leave the house".

"I just feel sorry for the guy who passed away," she said.

A resident on Cranbury Place said he "heard shouting and screaming" around 3am to 4am, which lasted for 40 minutes.

Vitalia Ilcsyuk, 50, said that she was "very worried" as her flat is on the ground floor and her partner was away for work that night.

"I am planning to ask the building management to put up a fence outside my window because of this," she said.

"I am worried for my safety."

What were police doing at the scene?

A police cordon has been in place along most of Cranbury Terrace with forensics officers at work in the area.

They could be seen looking under parked cars, examining the contents of wheelie bins and peering under a discarded mattress.

Blood was visible next to an evidence marker on the steps of a property in the street.

Should I be worried?

Despite people's shock, police say there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public at this time.

Detective Chief Inspector Danielle Daltrey said: “Firstly, I would like to say my thoughts are with the family of the man who has died.

“I understand this incident will be of concern to the local community, but I would like to reassure them that we do not believe there is any wider risk to the public at this time.

“Our investigation is at an early stage and we are working hard to establish exactly what happened.

“If you were in the vicinity of Cranbury Terrace at the time, did you hear or see anything out of the ordinary or of concern?

“Do you have any dash cam, ring doorbell or CCTV footage that could aid our investigation?

“If so, please contact us as soon as you can – you could make a real difference.”
