THE heavens opened and 50,000 pop fans were soaked through as the eighth Power in the Park delivered Pop Idol Will Young to Southampton.
But the weather could not dampen the spirits and prevent the fans singing along with Blue, Hear’Say, H & Claire, Liberty X and a host of other stars.
An estimated 60,000 pop fans flocked to the Common to see boy band Blue open the event at midday – but just minutes into their set, the rain started to fall.
Half way through the concert, plummeting temperatures and driving rain forced at least half of the crowd to leave.
These pictures were taken that day on June 9, 2002, and show the acts as well as the fans.
