BLUE CROSS has raised more than £1,000 for its rescue animals to mark the charity's 125th anniversary.

The Southampton team dressed up as superheroes to raise money through several events across June - Blue Cross month.

One of them was a beacon lighting for the Jubilee bringing “sausage bobbing” for dogs.

Rehoming supervisor Kirsty Smith, 35, said: “It's a big anniversary and I don’t think people realise how long we’ve been going.

“It’s been a whole team effort, fundraising across teams.

"We’ve done a lot online as well, an auction for prizes donated to us, a sponsored escape room, and a photo competition.

“We are so excited that we doubled our target. Our original target was £500 and we have more than doubled it.”

The money raised by the Blue Cross teams will go to rescues and animal hospitals all over the country.

Kirsty added: “All of it will go to helping pets in our care. It is especially needed now with the cost of living.

"The pressure is on to get the animals looked after in our care and rehomed.”

Blue Cross looks after around 40,000 pets every year with the money it raises going towards feeding, heating, housing, and medical treatment costs.

The rescue charity hopes to work towards raising more money next year.

When it was first set up in London in 1897, the charity was known as the Dumb Friends League.

The phrase "dumb friends" is thought to have come from a speech given by Queen Victoria.
