THE Labour leader of Southampton's council has launched a bid to become an MP.

Councillor Satvir Kaur is hoping to stand in current MP Alan Whitehead's seat of Southampton Test.

As reported in the Echo, Mr Whitehead is due to step down at the next election.

Cllr Kaur - who took on leadership of the council in May - must first be selected by Labour party members to become their chosen candidate at the general election.

On a pamphlet that has been sent out to members, Cllr Kaur said: “As leader of the council, I am working hard with an excellent team to make our city better.

“We need a Labour government that will invest in Britain’s future and create opportunities for all: one that will protect the workers and services we all rely on, empower the next generation to fulfil its potential and offer care and compassion to those in need.

“If selected, I will have big shoes to fill.

"Members have my commitment that I will work tirelessly and with integrity to represent our city in Parliament, just as Alan Whitehead has. I will do it with my own personal passion and energy.”

If elected Cllr Kaur is allowed to remain as both an MP and city councillor.

In the leaflet Mr Whitehead added: “It has been my honour to serve as your MP since 1997.

"Thanks to our hardworking local members, we have been a red beacon in the South for 25 years and that’s how I want it to stay for another generation when I step down.”

The pamphlet, which has been produced and distributed by the Labour campaign team, makes it clear that there is a general Labour consensus that real change can only happen if Labour is in power.

Cllr Kaur adds: “That’s why I’m seeking your vote. I can win for Labour and help deliver the change needed.”

The selection meeting will take place on July 10.
