THE Labour leader of Southampton City Council is set to be a candidate at the next general election.

Cllr Satvir Kaur has been chosen to fight the Southampton Test seat currently held by Labour MP Alan Whitehead, who is standing down.

Cllr Kaur became leader of the council after Labour regained control of the authority from the Tories at this year's local elections.

Dr Whitehead, who has held the seat since 1997, was himself the leader of the council from 1984 until 1992.

Now Cllr Kaur has been chosen by Labour to be their candidate in Southampton Test when the next general election takes place.

Commenting on her selection, she said: "It is a tremendous honour to have been selected as the parliamentary candidate for Southampton Test.

"As a councillor and now council leader, I have fought for over a decade for a better deal for Southampton but in order to achieve lasting change, our city and country urgently need a Labour government.

"I want to be at the forefront of that change and to deliver real help to families with the cost of living."

Dr Whitehead added: "I’m absolutely delighted that Satvir has been selected. She is a local candidate with the right experience and proven track record of delivering for the city.

"I can think of no one to pass the torch to, to represent our city and to deliver for Southampton Test."
