NEARLY a quarter of adults in Southampton have not had a Covid vaccine, figures reveal.

Out of Fareham, the New Forest and Eastleigh, Southampton is the area with the lowest number of vaccinations, with only around 76.5 per cent of the population having received at least one jab.

Data from NHS England shows 176,420 people aged 18 and over in Southampton had received a first dose of a coronavirus vaccine by June 5.

Tracey Dingwall, Senior Communications Officer for Covid Vaccinations and Testing at Southampton City Council, said: “There are many factors that affect the rate of vaccination in the population and our relatively young, ethnically diverse, and more deprived population in Southampton compared to many areas can explain some of the differences between different places.”

Mrs Dingwall said that misinformation about the vaccine continues to spread online.

She is encouraging people to only use trusted sources such as the NHS website.

The council officer also highlighted research which showed that conveniently located vaccination clinics can also serve as a factor for people to get jabbed.

Approximately 75 per cent of residents over the age of 12 have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine in Southampton.

In contrast, Fareham, Eastleigh and the New Forest have one of the highest vaccination rates in the country, with NHS data showing a vaccination rate of at least 92.2 per cent for Fareham, 91.8 for the New Forest and 91.3 for Eastleigh.

The figures also show 90,671 people aged 18 and over in Fareham had received a first dose of the vaccine by June 5.

The total for the New Forest is 140,703 aged 18 while the same figure for Eastleigh stands at 101,994.

All adults in England have been eligible to book and receive a covid vaccination since June 2021, in what marked a milestone for the vaccine rollout.
