POLICE have confirmed the victim of the fatal fire that broke out in Burley at the weekend was a man in his 60s.

His death at the Esdaile Lane property is not being treated as suspicious but the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

One man who lives near Esdaile Lane said: "I was woken up by lots of fire engines and there was smoke everywhere."

"The whole community knows about it, it’s awful. I can’t think of a worse way to go," he added.

Multiple fire crews from Hampshire and Dorset tackled the blaze in the early hours.

Within half an hour, the flames had spread to the entire building.

Despite their efforts, the upper floors of the property were significantly damaged with half of the roof entirely destroyed.

Officers cordoned off the area, warning the scene would remain in place for a few days.
