BUS users will be able to enjoy slashed prices as part of a drive to ease the cost of living crisis.

Families and groups of friends will be able to travel across Southampton together with a one-day ticket for just £5.

The city council voted in a temporary bus fare offer during a meeting this week..

The move, an election pledge made by the council’s Labour administration, is beginning this weekend just as schools break up for the summer.

A spokesperson for the council said: ‘With the cost of living crisis hitting so many Southampton families, the council is offering a way to make it cheaper and easier for hard-pressed families to make the most of the city and enjoy a ‘staycation’ and travel on most of the bus services at a reduced rate.”

The offer is available on all main bus operators in the city.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, cabinet boss for transport and regeneration, said: “The Labour administration is supporting the main bus operators to give people the opportunity to enjoy cheaper travel during the period of the summer holidays. This great offer will help struggling families enjoy some days out in the city with unlimited travel capped at £5.”

Initially, the scheme will run until the end of August, but if it is a success, the council says it may be extended to include weekends from September, depending on how many people take up the offer this summer.
