DETECTIVES have launched a murder probe after a 19-year-old man suffered fatal stab wounds.

The man from Southampton was rushed to hospital with a puncture wound to his chest, but was later pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, a police cordon has been established in Langhorn Road, Swaythling.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported.

In the aftermath, members of the community have spoken out with some residents saying they are scared something like this could happen so close-by to their homes.

Dal Soomal, who lives on Harefield Road behind the scene, said: “It is terrifying. He was only 19. That is the same age as me. I pray for his family.”

Meanwhile, Faheem Tanoli lives just 200 metres from the crime scene.

He told the Echo: “It is alarming that these things are happening in your surroundings. You feel quite unsafe.

“When something so serious happens it is quite distressing.”

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder; a 46 year-old man from Bursledon, a 20 year-old man from Bursledon, a 20 year-old man from Hamble, a 23 year-old man from Eastleigh and a 35 year-old man from Lambeth.

They remained in police custody as the Echo went to press yesterday.

Swaythling Labour councillor, Lorna Fielker said she was shocked to hear the man had died, adding that her thoughts are with his family and friends.

“It has been reassuring for people to hear that the police made five arrests very quickly and have been carrying out patrols to speak to residents about any concerns they may have.”

Whilst fellow councillor and Safer City boss, Matt Ranyard, said: “This is a tragic event and our thoughts go out to the family and friends of this young man.

“This is an active police investigation with several arrests made, and we will continue to liaise with the police to ensure we can support any community issues from this incident.”

He added that the council is constantly working with police, schools and local charities to tackle knife crime in our city, “and divert young people away from harm”.

Forensics were also on the scene and residents spotted armed police at a property on Le Marechal Avenue, Bursledon.

Officers also attended an address on Westfield Road, Hamble.

One resident from Bursledon said: “It’s a bit worrying that it is going on in our estate, especially when there are young children around here.”

Detective Chief Inspector Danielle Daltrey said: “Firstly, I would like to express my condolences to the family of the man who has died.

“We take all incidents of serious violence in Southampton incredibly seriously and right now, officers are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the exact circumstances of what happened.

“The investigation is in an early stage, but at this time, we do not believe there is a wider risk to the public.

“We are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.”
