Police say the assault was committed by an "unknown person".

Another man was injured in the same attack, and took himself to Southampton General Hospital.

What do residents say?

Wilton Avenue resident Nial Jenkins said he heard "raised voices" on the street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 26-year-old said: "I did hear raised voices outside. It may have been at around 1am.

"We always get people coming back from a night out down here and shouting and making noise.

"There was a disturbance. They seemed generally as though they may have been drunk."

What do police say?

Police say no arrests have been made at this time.

Enquiries into the exact circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

Anyone with information that could help police with their investigation is urged to call 101, quoting crime reference number 44220307642.
