NEARLY 100 people came together to walk for hope for the first time since 2019, raising £8,000 in the process.

Wessex Cancer Trust's Walk For Hope event returned to the Hamble River following two Covid-affected virtual events.

Participants picked either a five or ten mile walk starting and finishing in the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley Abbey. Both routes took in the beautiful scenery along the Hamble River.

John and Sally Langham-Brown, who took part in the event, which raises money for cancer support locally, for the first time.

They said “It was lovely to be part of such a well-organised event that let us explore local countryside we’ve never seen before! A bonus was that it was dog-friendly and, of course, it was fantastic to fundraise for a local charity that supports a cause close to our hearts."

Daily Echo:

Rachel Billsberry-Grass, Wessex Cancer Trust’s CEO, told The Daily Echo that Walk for Hope was extra-special this year.

She added “Our fifth Walk for Hope was poignant because we were thrilled to come together again in person after Covid-19 forced us to host the past two events virtually.

"We hear so many inspirational stories from people who have been affected by cancer and the challenges they face. This made Walk for Hope the perfect event to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer.

Daily Echo:

"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part. A big thank you, too, to our team of volunteers. Without them, events like this simply couldn’t happen.”

All the money raised at the event will be used to provide practical and emotional support to people living with cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.

Every year around 23,000 people are diagnosed with cancer within the Wessex region. Wessex Cancer Trust's dedicated team are committed to offering free support for as long as people need it, away from a hospital environment.
