A SPITFIRE will soar over the Solent this weekend.

On Saturday, there will be a day of events to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Celebrations will include a Spitfire display over the Solent from 2pm, north of the Breakwater in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

The fly-over is courtesy of the Spitfire Academy at Goodwood in West Sussex.

The Cowes Parade is being touted as one of the best spots to view the activities with Princess Anne also attending.

There will be a showcase of more than 400 boats, to celebrate the Queen’s reign and recognise the support the Royal Family has given to water-based events over the last 70 years.

Chair of the organising committee, Jonathan Nainby-Luxmoore, said: “We will be delighted to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to the Solent Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“The Royal Family continues to give wonderful support to the sailing community and charities in the Solent and her presence will make this special celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee even more memorable."

The event is organised by a committee of sailing organisations, class associations and clubs from across the Solent region.
