PEOPLE across Southampton have been descending on the city's parks and open spaces as the country prepares for a second heatwave.

Weather experts at the Met Office predict local temperatures could soar as high as 28c this Friday.

Residents can expect a week of clear blue skies throughout the week.

It comes less than a month after a level 3 heatwave was issued in July with some Hampshire schools even forced to close.

As the mercury climbs, residents have been cooling off in parks and on the city waterfront.

keeping safe and coolDaily Echo: Macy Walker and her daughter Margot Macy Walker and her daughter Margot

Macy Walker, 22, who lives near the Bargate stayed in the shade with her one-year-old daughter Margot at Hoglands Park.

She said: "It can be a bit unbearable especially with the baby because she's all sweaty on me and it gets even hotter in my flat since there's no wind.

"I have a tiny fan which Margot loves but it can be a nice change coming outside like today."

The NHS advises the most vulnerable: babies, people with long-term illness, and older people – especially those over 75 to remain vigilant during the heatwave.

Southampton residents have shared their top tips to cope with hot weather heatwave including drinking water, staying out of the sun, and avoiding travel.

Hamish, 26, said: "It's been a real treat like a second summer. We're here visiting family in Eastleigh so we thought with the bit of warm weather today we'd dip in the water."

Katelyn, 26, added: "We're glad to see everyone enjoying it whilst it's here. We're going up to Cornwall to get a campervan soon so it's good weather to explore."

Children living in Holyrood estate built a lemonade stand to "raise money to go to the beach".

Marzell Taylor, ten, said: "We've had some really nice people come up and I am actually really happy because we've put a lot of effort in it.

"We're gonna spend it on floaties and go to Bournemouth beach."

The boys aged between ten and 13 raised £40 by charging a pound per drink and plan to raise more with a car wash later in the summer break.

Roleen Taylor, 36, says her two sons and their friends have made her "proud."

She said: "They came up with it all themselves and It's something positive in this heat.

"It keeps them out of trouble and makes little businessmen out of them."
