Motorists were advised not to worry about the scene as it was said to be no risk to the public.

In a post online, Hampshire Roads Policing Unit said: "If you see hazmat suited staff as you pass on the M3, be assured this is for their safety against corrosive liquid as they work.

"There is no risk to the public here."

Fire crews urged people to avoid the area due to the number of emergency services vehicles on the scene.
