AN A-ROAD is to remain closed this morning after a combine harvester damaged a gasline.

The A30 Greenhill in Sherborne is closed in both directions between Marston Road and Bristol Road and drivers are being asked to avoid the area whilst the gas board deal with the incident.

It's been reported that the combine harvester collided with a raised walkway on Greenhill which contains a gas line, and has damaged the link in two different places. Emergency services, SGNgas and Dorset Highways are said to on scene.

Heavy traffic is said to be building in the area as a result.

A spokesman for Travel Dorset said: "A30 Greenhill closed both directions, slow traffic due to an incident; between Marston Road and Bristol Road.

"A combine harvester has damaged a gasline along this section."

A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Following an incident involving a combine harvester and a gasline on Greenhill, Sherborne, the road is being closed and is likely to remain so for the rest of the morning whilst the gas board deal with the incident.

"Please avoid the area."

An update from DWFRS added: "The vehicle has hit a gas line causing a large gas leak.  We’ve handed the incident over to police to manage the road closure and the gas board are in attendance repairing the damage.

"We were called at 7:20am today and left the incident just before 9am."
