THOSE who attended the open day gained exclusive insight to the inner workings of the local theatre.

The Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS) hosted an open day at The Plaza Theatre to showcase the art deco building and get more people involved.

Visitors were welcomed to Romsey’s theatre on Saturday, August 6 for day of history, tours and behind the scenes demonstrations.

RAODS chairman and Romsey mayor Neil Gwynne led attendees on a tour of the theatre whilst explaining the history of the building. Talking about its time as a cinema before the building was taken over and converted into a theatre by RAODS in the 1980s. The mayor also revealed the theatre’s future plans to maintain and develop the historic venue.

Russell Theron, youth liaison officer for RAODS labelled the open day “a great success”. Mr Theron was impressed with the number of potential cast members they found. He said: “They just kept coming."

Russel continued: “We are so lucky to have such a fantastic local theatre on our doorstep in Romsey. However, it really relies on the help and support of volunteers who keep it running. The open day was not only about showcasing this fantastic building and the wonderful shows we host, but also finding passionate new volunteers. We certainly had lots of interest and offers of help which is great”. “

Directors of the upcoming shows were on hand to talk to those interested in taking part, supplying copies of scripts and details of auditions.

Chris Moses and Tris Harris from the technical team provided demonstrations on light and sound operation in the theatre. Their use of the fully operational prop telephone proved a favourite for the younger visitors.

Meanwhile, people interested in set building were allowed to see the scenery, props and large costume store as led by RAODS members Chris Moses and Caroline Egg.

The Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society own and operate The Plaza Theatre in Winchester Road, Romsey.
