A MUM has said she is "overjoyed" after her disabled son was able to play for the first time at an accessible playground.

Five-year-old Theodore Rabbetts joined friends for the first time after a new wheelchair-friendly roundabout was installed at Freemantle Lake Park in Millbrook.

His mother, Stacy Rabbetts became a full-time career for her son after he was diagnosed with an untreatable brain injury as well as epilepsy and autism.

Stacy shared a video on Facebook after her son took to the equipment soon after it was installed.

The family lives across from the park with mum-of-two Stacy saying she is happy he can "play with other kids like any other child".

The 41-year-old said: "He loves the roundabout - with his poor mobility he's never been able to play on normal playground equipment before so it's really great to watch him join the other kids.

"There is nowhere else he isn't restricted so it's nice to go somewhere where he can be a child with a little bit of independence."

Stacy said she suggested accessible playground equipment should be installed after attending one of Friends of Freemantle Lake Park's meetings.

Treasurer for the group, Rob Skinner, said: “It made my day seeing the disabled lad enjoying the new roundabout.

"I am looking forward to the new swing being installed, along with the revamped climbing frame. Hopefully in the park, there will be something for everyone to enjoy”

The group secretary, Charlotte Jess added: "We have some gym-style equipment going in and this was selected to help improve mobility as well as improve fitness.

"We know the park is well loved and used by local people so we tried very hard to make sure there was something for everyone there.

"We were delighted to be given the green flag award recently just let us know we’re going in the right direction."

Friends of Freemantle Lake Park is planning a get-together on September 17.
