THE long wait is finally over for thousands of young adults who collected their A-Level results today.

There was cause for celebration at Bitterne Park School sixth form which had an overall 96 per cent A-Level pass rate and 100 per cent pass rate for vocational subjects.

Alana Durrant, 19, took A-Level Business (B), Criminology (A) and Psychology (B).

"The result I’m most shocked about is Business," she said.

"I went from a U to a B. In my first year I got a U, U and an E. I came back here and I ended up getting these grades in my third year.

"I put the work in and got these results. I’m shocked and can’t believe I got a B in Business. I am absolutely buzzing."

Alana received an offer from a Russell Group university but is turning it down to study psychology at Bournemouth University.

Mia Ip studied Graphic Communications (A*), Art (A*), Media (Distinction).

The 18-year-old is going on to study Animation at Portsmouth University.

"I’m very happy. I did expect an A in Graphics, but I was really happy to receive an A*," she said.

Fellow student Mitchell Rankin, 18, received results for four subjects - Geography (A*), Business (A*), Economics (B), and IT (Distinction Star).

He said: "I am really happy with my results and can go on to study Business Analytics at Southampton University. To get two A* is more than I was expecting."

Further afield at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh, students and teachers were delighted at the results achieved.

The college said it has achieved its best ever results, with an overall 99 per cent A-Level and 100 per cent vocational pass rate.

Amelia Barnett, 18, has been offered a place at Oxford University to study Engineering thanks to her impressive grades.

She said: "I got an A* for Maths, Further Maths and Physics and an A in Chemistry. I am very happy.

"Studying Engineering at Oxford means I can put Maths and Science together to solve real life problems. And, it's good to get more women in engineering.

"I was really hoping I'd get the grades to study there."

Libby Mason is excited to study musical theatre at drama school following her results.

The 18-year-old said: "I am very, very happy with my results. I got double distinction star in Musical Theatre and an A* in Dance.

"I didn't expect this."

Full results from Southampton schools

Thousands of students across Hampshire celebrated their A-Level results on Thursday after an anxious wait.

Young adults in Southampton, Eastleigh and the New Forest received their exam results after a return to in-person exams post pandemic.

Grades have been purposefully lowered from levels seen in 2020 and 2021 - when students were assessed by teachers due to Covid-19.

  • Richard Taunton Sixth Form

The college is celebrating an improvement in its A Level performance, with Principal Paul Swindale praising students’ hard work.

51.2 per cent of all students achieved A* to C grades in three or more subjects.

The college has performed well in many subjects, including A Level Accounting with 71.4 per cent achieving grades A* to B and Art and Design Textiles with 62.5 per cent of students achieving grades A* to B.

Mr Swindale said: “Congratulations to all our students, they deserve this success because of the hard work they have put in over the past year.

"I am really pleased for the students and all the staff with the progress we have made.

"We are very keen to support any student that needs help with the University Clearing process and they must not hesitate to get in touch with the college over the coming days and weeks if they need to."

  • St Anne's Catholic School

​At St Anne's, 99 per cent of grades achieved a pass grade.  

Around a third of A-Level grades were A* or A, 60 per cent were A*-B and over 80 per cent were C or above.

Headteacher James Rouse said: "We are really pleased with how well our students have worked and achieved given the serious disruption to their education since year 11. We are proud of all of them and look forward to hearing about their successes in later life as they progress beyond our sixth form." 

  • Itchen College

Itchen College students have achieved a 99 per cent pass rate for A levels with 42 per cent of students achieving A* to B and 74 per cent achieving a grade between A* and C.

This is an improvement from 2019, the last time students sat public examinations.

Students on vocational courses have also achieved a 99 per cent pass rate with over 50% enjoying Distinction grades or better.

Principal Alex Scott said: "This is a fantastic set of results for a group of students that have not sat public examinations until now due to the pandemic.

"This group of students has worked tirelessly to ensure they overcame the barriers they faced due to lockdown in their first year, and Covid related absence in their second year.

"We are very proud of the effort of our students and staff that sits behind these results, and very thankful to the parents that have supported this achievement."

  • King Edward VI School

Headteacher Mr Parker said: "We are enormously proud of all of our exam year students at King Edward’s. 

"It is simply wonderful that every A Level exam taken at KES was passed this year, and that 69.3 per cent of all exams taken by our students achieved an A* or A grade. 

"Well done to you all!"

  • St Anne's Catholic School and Sixth Form College

Overall results for St Anne's sixth form are broadly in line with last year's results despite a national reduction of grades - 99% of grades achieved a pass grade.

Around a third of A level grades were A* or A, 60% were A*-B and over 80% were C or above.

Notable results include Sophie Suran, Zoya Ahsan and Katie George who achieved A* grades in all three of their subjects.

Lara Pina achieved one A* grade and two As and was successful in gaining her place at Oxford University to read psychology and linguistics.

  • Brockenhurst College

More than 500 A Level students at Brockenhurst College received their results yesterday, with the overall pass rate recorded at 97.4 per cent.

The percentage of A Level students achieving A* to B grades was 48.5 per cent, with over 72.7 per cent achieving A* to C grades across all their subjects.

One-hundred percent pass rates were achieved across 18 A Level subjects.

Vocational students (335 learners) achieved a 99.4 per cent pass rate, and more than half achieved a triple Distinction or above.

On Vocational Level 3 courses 54.3 per cent of students achieved a triple Distinction or above, which is the equivalent of achieving three A or A* grades at A-Level.

Vice Principal Simon Lovegrove said: “Many of this year’s cohort have not taken external exams since their SATs in Year 6, which makes their achievements even more remarkable.”

  • The Arnewood School

Students at the school in New Milton are celebrating "another set of fantastic results".

Outstanding students included Finn Sabin who achieved 3 x A* in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics and Dominic Renouf who achieved 1 x A* in Mathematics and 2 A grades in Physics and Further Mathematics.

Both are going to study at Warwick University.

Other notable results included Bethany Mitchell who achieved an A* in Mathematics, A* in Biology and an A grade in English Literature and is going on to read human science at University College London.

Matthew Borley achieved an A* in Mathematics and Computer Science and an A grade in Further Mathematics and is going on to read Computer Science at Southampton University.

Headteacher Nigel Pressnell said: "Huge congratulations to all of our students on another set of fantastic results with one in five students achieving A* - A grades. Each of them has worked extremely hard, supported by a dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching staff at the school."

  • Bay House Sixth Form

More than a fifth of students at Bay House Sixth Form achieved three or four A*/A grades for the first time.

In total, 38 per cent of students at the Gosport school achieved A*-A grades with 68 per cent achieving A*-B grades.

It means that roughly 90 per cent will get places at their first-choice university. Many of the students have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities and others will go on to study medicine or veterinary medicine.

  • Ringwood School

Headteacher Leanne Symonds said: "We are delighted that our students have equalled outstanding A-Level performances of the past.

"This year the percentage of top grades (grades A*/A/B) is 65.4%. The percentage of A*-C grades at A-Level is 88% and the average grade at our centre this year is grade B."

  • St Vincent College

The Gosport college celebrated its results, with 98 per cent of students achieving grade A* to E, with 75 per cent grade C or above in at least three subjects.

Principal Andy Grant said he is "delighted".
