A NEWLY married couple have had their honeymoon brought to a tragic end after a 'freak accident' left the groom in a coma.

Scott and Vicky Birch flew to Cyprus to get married on August 5 with children Connor, 14, and Chelsea, 12.

Two days after the wedding, 34-year-old Scott fell from a second-floor balcony in Ayia Napa.

The tree surgeon from Fawley is still in a coma in Cyprus, suffering with serious head injuries and broken bones.

His mum, Michelle Gateley, has made a plea for help to bring him home.

The 53-year-old from Hythe said: "It's overwhelming to be honest. He leaned over the balcony a bit too far. A freak accident.

"He needs to be close to family so he can have treatment. They need to do tests when he is out of the coma. I think he has also lost all his teeth.

"His medical insurance has covered most of his treatment but unfortunately it does not cover his trip home.

"They are stuck there. I can't even think straight at the moment.

"I just want everyone to help as much as they can to get my boy home. It is tragic.

"He just needs to be home near his friends and family so he can have the treatment and get well and get home."

Michelle said Scott's medical insurance had covered the cost of his treatment on the island, but will not cover the cost of an air ambulance to get him home.

"We are doing a fundraiser to try to raise £15,000 to get an air ambulance to get him home. I do not know what else to do," Michelle said.

A GoFundMe page has been started and in just three days more than £9,000 has been raised.

The purpose of the page is to bring Scott home to be surrounded by friends and family so he can be "treated locally by the outstanding NHS".

"Any contribution will be so greatly appreciated, from a share to a small or large donation to help this family get home where they belong," it states.

Scott, who is "fighting is for his life", remains in Cyprus with Vicky and his children.
