AN ESCAPED snake seen slithering across the rooftops of homes in Chandler’s Ford is not being investigated by police.

The large Albino Burmese python escaped from its home in Ribble Close in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Speaking to the Daily Echo on the day, one homeowner said a snake of that size outdoors is "not safe".

Although residents say the incident was reported to the RSPCA and the police, Hampshire Constabulary said it is “not a policing matter”.

However, the animal charity confirmed it is looking into the incident.

People shared their shock at the news on the Daily Echo’s Facebook page.

One commenter said they would “die of shock” if the snake was near them, while another said, “Omg I would poo myself.”

A reader said: “This is within slithering distance to me. I need immediate therapy.”

Many questioned how a snake that size – which is believed to be 18 foot long – can be kept as a pet.

A reader said: “No way a snake of that size should be kept as a pet.”

The RSPCA previously issued a warning to exotic pet owners to keep their snakes securely contained as hot weather can make the animals very active and more likely to escape.

In 2022 alone the charity took over 1,200 reports about snakes, with the highest number of calls coming in during the summer months.

RSPCA scientific officer, Evie Button said: “Snakes are excellent escape artists and will take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure door, or a loose-fitting lid to make a break for it.

“So we would urge all pet snake owners to be extra vigilant at this time of year, invest in an enclosure suitable for the particular species and make sure that enclosure is kept secure - and locked if necessary - when unattended.”
