A spectacular weather phenomenon associated with thunder was caught on camera in the sky above the Solent.

Daily Echo reader Sinead Mitten spotted a dark shelf cloud over Calshot beach during last night's thunderstorms.

The long, thin cloud is not unsual, however, it is not often photographed.

Lightning strikes and thunder hit the city on Sunday and Monday night, bringing torrential rain and lightning flashes.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorm had been issued by the Met Office.

What is a shelf cloud?

A shelf cloud is a type of arcus clouds, which the Met Office describes as "low-level clouds associated with powerful thunderstorms".

They normally form on the leading edge of storms.
