A period of national mourning has now begun following the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

The 96-year-old monarch died peacefully at Balmoral yesterday afternoon surrounded by her family.

News of her death has been met with deep sadness by communities up and down the country and beyond.

Tributes to Her Majesty's long life of service have been pouring in ever since Buckingham Palace made the announcement at around 6.30pm.

As the national mourning officially begins, events celebrating the Queen and her legacy will be taking place across Southampton.

Wreath laying

A wreath laying ceremony will take place at 2pm in front of the Civic Centre.

It will be led by the Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire and the Lord Mayor of Southampton.

Flags on council buildings are flying at half-mast.

Books of condolence

Books of condolence will be available to sign in the Civic Centre and Central, Bitterne, and Shirley libraries.

The Civic Centre will be open for signing the book of condolence until 5pm.

On Saturday and Sunday and Monday to Friday next week, it will be open from 9am to 5pm.

An official area will be set aside for the laying of floral tributes. This will be on the grass bank on the right-hand side of the car park (as you face the Civic Centre).

Books of condolence in the Central, Bitterne and Shirley libraries will be open to sign during regular opening hours.

St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church will be opening its doors from 9.30am for prayer and reflection.

Candles will be available to light.

The church will toll its bells at 12pm today with 96 rings - one for each year of Her Majesty's life.

Other churches are being encouraged to join in.
