IT WAS a touching moment as Pamela Sinnett lay flowers at the Civic Centre on Friday.

The 70-year-old from Southampton was born the same year of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.

"I was born in the year of Queen Elizabeth's coronation," she told the Echo as mourners started to place floral tributes on outside the Guildhall.

She paused, looking at the bouquet and reflecting on the passing of a monarch who had served the nation.

"Personally, I think when she lost Philip she never really got over that and declined since then.

"We shed a few tears (on Thursday). When we think of everything that’s happened, she has been there for everybody.

"Most of us have never known any different.

"It will take a while for people to get used to the idea of not having a Queen.

"I feel for the family as well. She was a Queen but she was a grandmother and a mother like us."

One card read: "HM Queen Elizabeth II.

"You were the best of us all," wrote one woman.

"You dedicated your life to us, all of us.

"Your grace humility, dedication and love will never be forgotten.

"You will be loved and missed always."

Another said: "RIP to our amazing Queen. You gave your life to your people and for that we will always be grateful.

"I will never forget the smile you gave me when I met you.

"A true honour."

In the capital, mourners outside Buckingham Palace have paid tribute to the Queen as “the grandmother of the nation” and “a stabilising factor in the world”.

Since news of the Queen’s death broke at 6.30pm on Thursday, thousands of people from across the country – and the globe – have visited the royal residence in central London to feel part of a moment in history.

Many were crying, praying, and laying colourful flowers at the wrought iron gates on Friday morning.

Nearby florists had sold out due to rocketing demand, and charity staff were selling white flowers in Green Park for those streaming down the pathways that lead to the Palace.
