HAMPSHIRE constabulary has urged council bosses not to allow the Isle of Wight festival to go ahead over fears of lack of policing.

No agreement has yet been reached between festival organisers and the police force on the number of officers that will be dedicated to the event or who will foot the bill.

Isle of Wight councillors are due to consider the application for a licence for the event at a meeting next week.

However, in the application an objection has been lodged by Hampshire Police. The force say that with the increase in numbers from 59,999 to 69,000 more resources will be needed.

In its letter Hampshire Police said: "Police have been in consultation with the applicants solicitors and have agreed a certain number of licensing conditions.

"However, on the principal issue of dedicated police resources and funding, there has been no agreement despite attempts by police and applicant has not negotiated to date."

The report states that if the funding of extra police resources at the event is not met by the organisers the force will struggle to cope with covering the festival and responding to emergencies.

Festival organiser John Giddings said a sum of money had been offered to pay for policing.

He told the Daily Echo that negotiations were taking place. He said: "The only concern the police have is that I wont pay their fee, they are not objecting to the event itself."

He added that spending £400,000 on security showed his commitment to safety.

Although the application outlines a rise in capacity by 10,000 Mr Giddings said the tickets available remained 55,000 and the extra capacity was to cater for extra staff.

Objections were also received from residents living near the site who raised concerns about camping being allowed in the car park along East Cowes Road and seeking assurances that a buffer zone would be in place.
