A FIRE gutted two Hampshire flats in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews from Fareham, Portchester and Gosport were called to the blaze at Menin House in Privett Road, Fareham, at around 2.15am.

The block of more than 20 flats was evacuated but the serious damage was contained to two apartments.

One man was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham to be checked over after suffering smoke inhalation, but it is understood their condition was not serious.

Menin House hit the news last October when Fareham magistrates rejected a Hampshire Police application to seal off one of the properties which it was argued was being used as a crack house.

Although proof was provided that the flat was being used as a drugs den, police could not conclusively show that antisocial behaviour said to be blighting the lives of neighbours was associated with the specific apartment.
