A CITY centre restaurant is getting a revamp which will include a new rooftop bar and a separate restaurant.

Chinese restaurant Shanghai 1814, at 165-168 High Street, is about to get a big makeover.

An application to Southampton City Council, made by Su Sun, was approved on September 9.

The extension will include a new cocktail lounge, Teppanyaki restaurant, sky bar and basement servicing.

The five-storey extension will involve new floorspace of 770 sq metres.

The Grade II listed building was formerly an HSBC bank.

The ground floor will be a cocktail bar, entered in to by a new corner entrance off Castle Way/Albion Place.

This will be followed by Teppanyaki restaurant over two floors, then a cocktail lounge, and finally a sky bar at the fourth level with a sky terrace.

There will be a "rooftop view of passenger ships".

The extension will be behind the restaurant, onto the service yard and car park.

The site is currently a Chinese restaurant, with many separate party dining spaces including a mezzanine balcony with views over the restaurant, and karaoke function room.

There are already upper floors with private dining rooms.

The front of the building is the same as it was when it was built in 1900. The Neo Baroque style is one of only a few surviving pre-war buildings.

The plans hint at an "oriental inspired motif" in the design, to "create a wow factor".
