IT is a tradition as old as the picturesque Hampshire village it transforms for one day every year.
Hundreds of buyers, sellers, traders and onlookers descended on Wickham yesterday for the annual horse fair.
One of the major events in England's wider travelling community's calendar, people came from across Europe to meet in Hampshire.
With roads in and out closed to all traffic, Wickham's historic village square was transformed into a fairground for the day, while Winchester Road became a parade ground and market place like no other.
In scenes that have changed little since the 13th century, horses of all ages were run up and down the street while traders huddled together to haggle.
Discussions over prices would suddenly give way to a handshake, and another deal had been done.
Dilys Doran, a horse breeder and trader from near Bath, has been coming to Wickham for years.
"People come from all over the country to look at horses, to buy, sell or part- exchange, and to meet their friends," she said.
"We've had people approach us from Holland and Germany, and they come from other European countries because it's such a lovely occasion."
