A FATHER-OF-THREE is selling clothes and shoes at knockdown prices to help people survive the cost of living crisis.

Clothes £1 on 280 Shirley Road sells garments, old and new, for just £1.

The venture is the brainchild of Wayne Hammond, who realised clothes were just too expensive for some people to afford.

He told the Echo: "About a month ago I went to a charity shop to buy a coat and it was about £40. I just couldn't believe it.

"With the cost of living going up, people's bills going up, rent going up, you can't expect someone to pay £40 for a coat and that too, from a charity shop."

The father of three has turned his storage unit into a shop where customers can shop for pre-loved, new and designer clothes.

The shop buys clothes at 30p per kg and resells them for £1.

The only exceptions are shoes, which can cost up to £5, and school uniforms which can be collected for free.

Wayne opened the shop on Wednesday, September 28, and so far, customers have given it the thumbs up.

The Shirley business owner added: "You see it on the news how people are not able to afford basic necessities. And we are trying really hard to help them in any way possible.

"In the shop, we are selling clothes that are brand new and of good quality.

"Some of the people who have visited us said 'thank God for the prices' and it's nice to hear that."

With the energy price cap rise coming into force, times are tough for everyone, including Wayne.

He said: "We've never done well. We are not a rich or wealthy family, but we do fine, and our kids are happy, and they’ve got everything they need. If they are happy, that’s all that matters."

On Saturday, Wayne was also joined by his 10-year-old daughter, Kiera, who helped customers bag their goods.

She said: "Shops like this really help make a difference to the community."

The shop will be donating 10 per cent of all profits to the NSPCC.
