SOUTHAMPTON motorists have been plagued with traffic misery this week as works continue on a major route.

One lane of Redbridge Causeway closed this week causing heavy delays during peak times.

The traffic has been described as "very distressing" by residents, but what exactly is going on?

Here's all you need to know about the Redbridge Causeway roadworks:

What is going on?

One lane of Redbridge Causeway has been closed westbound.

This is so workers can replace the bridge parapet (barrier) on the bridge just before the Totton bypass.

The lane closure is causing long delays for motorists during rush-hour.

Part of the footway has been closed and an alternative route has been provided.

Delays of up to 40 minutes have been recported in the last few days, with queues of traffic heading back towards Nursling on the M271.

When will they end?

The works started on October 3 and are set to finish on December 2.

Who is responsible?

Hampshire County Council is responsible for the current roadworks on Redbridge Causeway.

The highway authority is Southampton City Council.

What are residents saying?

Daily Echo readers have expressed their frustration at the lengthy delays.

One reader, Jackie Parker, described the traffic as "very distressing".

Dave J King added: "Absolute joke. There’s always some work going happening on the causeway."

Alice Curtis pointed out the diversions are having a "knock-on effect" on nearby roads while Gregor Czerski added: "Southampton City Council are doing a great job of bringing this city to a complete standstill with gridlocked traffic. Absolute joke."
