PROPOSALS for a new 5G mast in Southampton have been thrown out.

Plans for a 19m high pylon caused upset for Portswood residents when they were lodged with the city council.

They had been submitted by Clarke Telecom to expand the Three 5G network.

The monopole would have been built on Grosvenor Road and included equipment cabinets.

However, the application was rejected on Thursday with a planning officer saying it would have resulted in a visually dominant and intrusive structure in a residential area.

It was also deemed the pylon would have had an adverse impact on the street and been detrimental to the character of the area.

Commenting on the plans, a neighbour cited fears over road safety for children that attend Portswood Primary School as the cabinets would be “large and obscuring”.

The neighbour added: “I see these boxes as a risk to primary school children that may run out towards school. Obscurity would give drivers less time to react which could result in an accident.”
