A POPULAR back street boozer in Shirley is the best pub in Southampton, according to our readers.

The Kings Arms in Church Street received dozens of votes in an online poll. 

Located between Shirley High Street and Shirley Towers, The Kings Arms is a friendly pub that attracts locals and sports fans wanting to indulge in the great coverage of televised football matches, as well as pool and darts.

It gets particularly busy during live music and karaoke sessions. 

The city's premier cabaret venue bagged second spot. The London Hotel on the corner of Oxford Street was lauded by readers as 'the best night out ever'.

The friendly and welcoming LGBTQ+ pub is run by David and Ray Riley-Cole and boasts fabulous drag queens on stage at weekends, superb roast dinners and a glamorous look.

Next up was The Saints, a family-friendly community pub in Millbrook well-known for its lively atmosphere and a host of special events including Millbrook's Got Talent, and The Hobbit, an iconic Southampton boozer in Bevois Valley Road.

The Dancing Man, the pub, restaurant and brewery inside a 700-year-old waterfront building used in the Middle Ages, tied for the next spot with The Cricketers, which has a country pub feel in the heart of Bedford Place, and The Key and Anchor in Freemantle, where two of the locals turned landlords.

The Smugglers on Carlton Place, with its inner-city garden oasis and fabulous food, and live music venue Firehouse weren't short of votes.

Also receiving several accolades were historic brew pub The Platform Tavern, opposite Town Quay, Saints-themed sports bar The Painted Wagon in West Marlands Road, legendary live music venue The Joiners in St Mary's Street, The historic Red Lion in High Street, Taberna 13, the latest incarnation of the corner pub on Terminus Terrace and traditional real ale pub The Wellington Arms in Freemantle.

Lots of readers felt their kitchen or lounge was the city's best drinking establishment, while others mourned the loss of their local turned convenience store.

Other venues being given great reviews included The Four Horseshoes in Nursling, The Humble Plumb in Bitterne, The Shooting Star in Bevois Valley Road and  Hanover Buildings venue Heartbreakers.
