THE appointment of Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister has been hailed as a “watershed moment” by a Southampton business expert.

Amarjit Singh, CEO of India Business Group, called the former Chancellor’s rise to power “historic” as Sunak becomes the first British Asian Prime Minister.

Mr Singh is a business consultant in trade and investment between the UK and India and accompanied former Prime Minister David Cameron on his trip to India in 2013.

Speaking about what this means for the city of Southampton and for the nation, he said: “It’s a watershed moment to have a British Indian prime minister.

“It’s historical because it shows the level of equality and diversity and tolerance in the nation. Rishi Sunak has a proven track record of delivering economic stability and growth when we look at his role as Chancellor.”

Mr Singh also said that Sunak’s victory will also serve to inspire generations from similar backgrounds.

He said: "It’s a hugely positive development in terms of providing inspiration to the next generation of game changers and leaders to show that through hard work talent and dedication you occupy the highest office of the land."

He added: "He’s a role model and an inspirational figure and really demonstrating the positive change in diversity and inclusion the UK is showing."

Rishi Sunak has become the new Prime Minister after winning the Conservative Party leadership contest.

The ex-chancellor oversaw the nation’s finances during the COVID pandemic and was the only candidate to warn enough support from Tory MPs.

His rival Penny Mordaunt, MP for Portsmouth North, pulled out of the contest just before nominations were due.
