A SOUTHAMPTON woman who runs her own beauty parlour is now stepping up to change perceptions for women with menopause.

Fran Bholah from Sholing has created her business, the Lash and Nail Bar with hopes of treating women with nail changes caused by menopause.

The 51-year-old said she has experienced "every symptom under the sun" including hot flushes, hair loss, and brittle nails.

But she now wants to help women in similar circumstances who would not normally go to a beauty parlour due to their hormonal changes.

The mother of three said: "It's intimidating going to a normal high street nail salon.

"The tools they use are harsh on older women's brittle nails causing pain and bleeding. It shouldn't hurt to get your nails done.

There's a lot of negativity about when you are in a situation with lots of young people around not understanding what you're going through.

"My business I run from my home. People can come in and talk with me about what they are feeling so I can give them the best treatment.

"I take my time with my clients. I don't use electric tools I use hand files. It's like therapy in a lot of ways.

"We have a chat and I understand what they're going through. We talk about the symptoms like memory loss and hot flushes.

"I had one of my clients have a hot flush right in the chair and I said no worries I brought out a fan and it was fine."

Fran said that after beginning her business two years ago she saw that changes were needed to help older women wanting beauty treatment.

She said: "I sort of stumbled into this. Before I was a fitness instructor but I had to change my career as I grew older and my body slowed down.

"Now I work creating nail art and dyeing, lifting, and shaping brows for women who have hair loss.

"I want everyone who is coming in to feel brilliant after they leave. If they have had a bad day they come in have a chat or sit with my dogs.

"They say at the end I feel amazing. That's what I want."
