SOUTHAMPTON police station has been hit by a legionella outbreak.

The bacteria was discovered in the Western Police Investigation Centre in Southern Road earlier today after positive tests were made.

However, this will not affect policing in the city, the force has confirmed.

In an email sent out to staff, Superintendent George White said all taps and showers in the building will be “out of action” for at least 24 hours.

In lieu of running water, hand sanitiser and bottled water will be provided and available to everyone in the building.

The email goes on to say that the toilets can still be used.

Supt White added: “I am sorry for the disruption this causes but I would like to reassure you all that measures are being taken to ensure the safety of everyone in the building.”

Engineers and the estate team will be working to ensure the entire system is flushed and pasteurised.

The water supply is expected to be working fully again by Saturday evening.

Hampshire Constabulary has since confirmed the outbreak.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm that legionella has been located in some water outlets at Southampton Police Investigation Centre.

"We are working with our colleagues at the OPCC to resolve the matter as quickly as possible, with engineers on site over the weekend.

"The safety of our officers and staff is always our priority and we have taken the necessary measures to ensure those working at the building can continue to do so.

"The public will not see any impact on our operational policing in the city."

Earlier this year it was revealed the station will close to undergo a major refurbishment in 2023.

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones is planning to close it for “much-needed upgrades”.
