PROPERTIES within a new retirement complex are now up for sale following the developer's takeover due to no one stepping forward to run a pub.

In the original planning commission, dating back more than 10 years ago, the site in Abbotswood Common Road was proposed for a pub. But with no one prepared to build and run a pub in the given area, permission was given to McCarthy Stone to create a retirement living development.

Deputy leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Cllr Nick Adams-King, said: "Lots of the locals had bought their houses with the promise of a pub being there and were consequently pretty upset when they discovered it wasn't going to be delivered."

Once complete, Glebe Court will entail 36 one and two-bedroom apartments, with the first occupants expected in November 2023. The aim of the project is to help retirees above the age of 60 continue to live independently without the worry of looking after a larger home.

Cllr Nick Adams-King said: "It's a shame that the original use of this site could not be met, but as our population gets older finding accommodation that's designed for older people is increasingly important. Making sure that local infrastructure, most particularly health services, can cope is vital. I very much hope the developers engage with local health services to ensure that's the case."

The new complex boasts quality built-in appliances in every apartment and landscaped gardens which will be maintained all year round. Regular events will take place in the communal lounge and in the gardens in the summer.

Visitors will also be welcome for an overnight stay in the hotel-style guest suite. A manager will be based on-site to offer any help or support that homeowners need as well as a 24-hour emergency call system and door video entry.

The retirement communities developer anticipates the new builds will bring a financial boost to the area, creating local jobs and increasing spending in Romsey.

McCarthy Stone Southern's Nicki Beswarick said: "We've already received tremendous interest in Glebe Court, where residents will be able to enjoy a unique brand of Retirement Living high-quality, low-maintenance apartments in a beautiful setting with plenty going on, both on-site and in and around Romsey. We would urge anyone interested to get in touch as soon as possible to reserve their dream home."

Prices currently start from £320,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and from £450,000 for a two-bedroom, for those who want to buy outright. Rental and part-buy part-rent options are also available.
