In the past year, MPs in and around Southampton have earned thousands on second jobs and were gifted tickets to festivals, dresses and handbags.

The register of interest, a system used by MPs to declare earnings on top of their salary, shows MPs in the area have made thousands of pounds through consultancy work and were offered gifts such as tickets to Glastonbury and handbags worth over £400.

Royston Smith, Tory MP for Southampton Itchen, cashed in £16,000 in consultancy work for Hampshire-based landowners Barker Mill Estates.

Although the work was carried out between May and December 2021, payment for the services was registered this year.

The total of 80 hours of work across seven months is the equivalent of being paid £200 an hour.

The MP also received two free tickets from Genting Casinos to the Tottenham v Southampton game on February 6 worth a total of £600 and another two free tickets to the Saints v Crystal Palace game worth £700.

Mr Smith received a total of £17,300 this past year in earnings and gifts.

When asked about it by the Daily Echo, he said: "All looks to be in order."

Caroline Nokes, Tory MP for Romsey and Southampton North has been given the ultimate paycheck as a policy adviser for the Refugee, Asylum and Migration Policy Project (RAMP).

For her work, which started in November 2021 and is due to carry on until May 2023, Mrs Nokes is expected to bring home almost £35,000.

The Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee was also gifted a second-hand LK Bennett dress valued at £225 and a second-hand Marc Jacobs handbag worth £450 by the recycled clothes brand Recycledby.

She was also gifted tickets to football matches and various festivals, including two tickets to Glastonbury in July worth £2,600 from PRS for Music.

In total, Mrs Nokes is expected to have received £40,313 in earnings and gifts.

Paul Holmes, Tory MP for Eastleigh, was treated to a night out by Channel 4 at the Bafta TV Awards in May, with a ticket value of £772.

His £3,100 trip to Israel and the West Bank on a "fact-finding political delegation" from July 24 to 29 was also paid for by Conservative Friends of Israel Ltd.

Meanwhile, Suella Braverman, MP for Fareham and Home Secretary, was given a donation of £10,000 during her Tory leadership campaign by First Corporate Consultants.

She was also offered discounts on digital services during the campaign at a value of £2,000.

Other gifts or benefits include two tickets to the England v Germany game in Wembley on September 26 worth £900. 

The Home Secretary is expected to have received £13,250.48 in earnings and gifts.

Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test only had his holiday cottage in Devon to account for.

All five MPs were approached for comment but the Echo only received a response from Royston Smith.
