Southampton residents struggling to pay for food essentials are being urged to come forward for help.

As the cost-of-living crisis squeezes household incomes, those under financial strain are being urged not to suffer alone and to seek help.

People are being advised to contact projects across the city offering a range of support from free hot meals, food parcel deliveries, pantries and community larders.

Food membership clubs where people can pay a weekly membership which allows them access to food items have been made available.

People can turn to community larders where they can turn up and pay a donation to get what is needed depending on what’s available.

Lastly, there are also food banks offering emergency food packages on a referral basis.

Parents with young children on benefits can also receive a healthy start card which will give an extra allowance to buy items such as milk, formula, fruit and vegetables.

'No one needs to go hungry in our communities'

Leader of Southampton City Council, Cllr Satvir Kaur said: “We know that many people are struggling with the rising cost of living, especially with heat and hunger this winter.

“One in three children are living in poverty and thousands are skipping meals.

“It’s why, as well as Southampton’s Warm Welcome scheme, we’re becoming a Right to Food City – meaning that as a council and city, we’re all working together to ensure whatever your circumstances, no one needs to go hungry in our communities”

For those unable to access the internet, they can call SO:Linked on 02380202650.

The support group is open 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday.

Meanwhile, a cost of living hub has been created on the council’s website which includes what’s available locally and from the Government.
