A woman says her life was saved by her "dream" car after she was involved in a multi-vehicle crash.

Jenny Wilkie was driving home from work in her BMW 118 M Sport when she spotted a speeding blue BMW coming towards her.

The 46-year-old project coordinator was waiting in traffic.

All of a sudden, the BMW ploughed into a grey Astra, which swerved into her car and forced her into the bus lane on West End Road.

Jenny believes her £27k car, which she'd only owned for six months, saved her life.

Recalling the crash on Monday evening, Jenny said: “I was stationary on West End Road, on the bridge, as there was lots of traffic going through Bitterne.

“In my driver’s window I noticed a car racing up the road which smashed into the back of a grey Astra.

“It was a massive smash that forced the Astra to swerve into me.

“My car was hit so hard I was forced into the bus lane. Because of the impact, it automatically called the BMW helpline which was brilliant.

“My car saved my life.”

Eyewitnesses rushed to Jenny’s aid as the police made their way to the scene.

She said: “People came over to me but my door couldn’t open, it was jammed.

“When the police arrived, a lovely officer managed to get the door open. But my windows were smashed by the force of the impact.

“I have been driving for 30 years and that was my first accident. You see accidents happen, but you never expect to be in one.”

She added: "First responders came over and wrapped me in one of those foil blankets.

"Physically I was ok but was affected by the shock of what happened."

A 58-year-old man from Lymington has since been arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.

He is currently in police custody.
