TWO parents pushing a buggy were nearly struck by a bus at a notorious zebra crossing, shocking footage shows.

Juliet Mayne and her partner Dan Overy used the crossing on Portsmouth Road around 5pm on Wednesday.

In CCTV footage shared with the Echo, Dan can be seen pushing their seven-month-old daughter across the crossing as a First Bus drives in front of them.

Both Juliet and Dan wave frustratedly to the driver who continued to drive through the crossing.

The pair, who live in Lowford with their two children, said the incident was “really scary.”

It is the latest in a series of incidents - including a woman being hit by two vehicles, and a lollipop lady's stick being hit by a car.

Juliet, 39, said: “We were going to the nursery to collect our eldest - we use that crossing all the time.

“People use the road as a cut-through to avoid Windhover Roundabout.

“Portsmouth Road is very dangerous at peak times, but even at all times. It was really scary.

“If the buggy had been a bit further forward, it could’ve been hit. We should feel safe in knowing that we can cross safely.

“A pedestrian crossing is the only option.”

This is the third incident in three months at this Bursledon crossing and comes after a woman, Jackie Carrington, was hit by two cars while trying to cross the road.

One month later, a car ploughed into a lollipop’s lady stick as she tried to safely guide schoolchildren across the road.

Jackie Carrington is among those calling for a pedestrian crossing.

The 59-year-old said: “I am hoping and praying that Eastleigh Borough Council follow through and put a pelican crossing there to replace the zebra crossing.

“I hope they do it as it will be safer for the whole community.

“I really hope they do something about it in a short space of time. I would like it to be tomorrow, but I know that’s not going to happen, but the sooner, the better.”

Eastleigh councillors raised safety concerns surrounding the crossing at the Bursledon, Hamble and Hound Local Area Committee meeting last week.

Cllr Steve Holes raised a motion regarding traffic safety on Portsmouth Road.

He said: “In recent months there has been significant increase in traffic incidents on and around the zebra crossing in Lowford which calls into question the safety of pedestrians using the crossing.

“These incidents have taken place at all times of day, including during school run times when the school crossing patrol were present.

“I recently spent an hour and a half observing the crossing during the morning school run and while no incidents of bad driving took place, I did observe that most of the continuous flow of traffic did not enter or leave School Road suggesting that the majority of vehicles heading in both directions on Portsmouth Road were using it as an alternative to Hamble Lane and Windhover roundabout.

“I also observed that busses stopping at the bus stop opposite the entrance to the community centre actually caused problems with cars straddling the crossing on at least three occasions during the time I was there, leading to sight lines to the crossing being restricted.”

First Bus has been contacted for a comment.
