A COUPLE has set up a fundraising page to pay for their dog’s surgery after they discovered he had thyroid cancer.

Genna Hunt, 34, and her partner David Hodgson, 37, discovered that their 10-year-old dog Bandit had thyroid cancer after they found a lump on his neck in early January 2023, with the vet later confirming it to be cancerous.

This came after Bandit had a pair of seizures in 2021 and 2022, with vets noting at the time that he had a high thyroid count.

However, with David being self-employed as a tree surgeon and landscape gardener and Genna working part-time for Hampshire County Council, they do not have the money required to pay for the surgery needed to save Bandit’s life.

With this in mind, the couple instead started a Gofundme page to help raise funds to pay for the £4,000 surgery due to Bandit’s insurance not covering the total amount.

Genna explained: “We’re insured with Petplan, we have insurance, but it’s only £3,000 per condition. And because Bandit’s already had £800 worth of testing, that doesn’t leave much for treatment.”

She continued: “Like, I said, we’ve spent £800 on testing so far to know he has cancer, that leaves us with, I think I’ve got £2,100 left of insurance to then get treatment, and it doesn’t leave you anything.

“So, people have been absolutely amazing, and we’ve raised over £900 so far. There are strangers donating, and otherwise you have no choice – you just have to leave him. And he’s a very healthy dog, other than the cancer, and we just want to give him to best chance and the vets think it’s the right thing to help him.

“So, we thought it was worth a go trying to raise the money to have the operation.”

The couple, who live in Eastleigh, said that they would be “over the moon” if they were able to raise enough money to help cover the cost of Bandit’s operation.

Genna continued: “It really would mean the world to us. He’s our absolute baby, we’ve had him since he was a puppy. He’s our world, and he’s a very spoilt husky.

“So, to give him the opportunity to save his life, basically, means the world.”
