CONCERNS have been raised again over the safety of Southampton's parks after reports that a woman had been raped.

Officers were called to Palmerston Park in the city centre at 7.07am on Sunday after reports a woman in her late teens had been raped.

A large area was sealed off and a 27-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of rape.

But now residents have said they are worried about the area's parks with one saying "women are not safe".

One onlooker, Kerry, who lives on the Avenue said: "It's awful but it's not the first time.

"It's certainly a place I avoid, especially not in daylight.

"It's such a huge societal issue. I don't even know how we can fix it".

The incident comes as concerns have been raised about plans to switch off street lighting in the city to save money. Lights will not be switched off in parks.

It is also almost one year to the day since Palmerston Park was cordoned off on February 21, 2022 after reports of a sexual assault.

Another person walking in the park on Sunday, Denis Fryer from Totton, said: "I am shocked that this happens.

"Unfortunately it's become quite common. I am sure there are measures that can be put together to stop it.

"But the thought that people can't go out for a walk or feel safe is horrible."

One couple from Winchester added: "This happens all the time these days.

"It's up to the police and services to decide how to tackle the problem."

Another person said: "I wish I could say I can't believe this has happened but sadly I can.

"It's awful and this is why I try and avoid the parks."

An investigation has now been launched with police remaining at the park on Sunday to gather evidence.

DCI Andrea Douglas, who is leading the investigation, said the force is not looking for anyone else but we still want to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened.

“If you were in the vicinity of Palmerston Park between 6.30am and 7.30am and saw anything which could aid our investigation, please get in touch.

“We appreciate this is a worrying incident, and there will be extra patrols in the area as a result. If you see an officer and have any concerns please speak to them.”
