AFTER a long wait, Aldi has finally announced the opening date of its new Southampton store.

The supermarket chain will be taking over the premises formerly occupied by B&M on Auckland Road, Millbrook.

Inspirational athlete and paralympic gold medallist Aaron Phipps will cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening.

He will also give away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s famous "Super Six" range to the first 30 customers in the queue.

The wheelchair rugby star said: "I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat with customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Paralympics GB."

Meanwhile, store manager James Mahood said: "We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Millbrook. It’s set to be a special day, and having Paralympics hero Aaron Phipps join us will make it a morning to remember."

The new branch has created 45 jobs.

Shoppers will have access to fresh, British meat products with weekly offers, exclusive beers, wines, and spirits, and a ‘Food to Go’ section.

Specialbuys will also be available in the middle aisle every Thursday and Sunday.

Charities and food banks in the city are also urged to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that will enable them to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables, and baked goods, seven days a week.

The new store will officially open on Thursday, March 30 at 8am.
