A HUGE development in Southampton will now have more retail and leisure space.

Around 52,000 square feet in the £500m development Centenary Quay in Woolston is being marketed in a bid to attract shops and leisure providers.

The space had been due to house Morrisons before plans for the supermarket on the site were axed in 2016.

Centenary Quay offers homes in a 27-storey tower, office and commercial spaces - and will now also have more retail and leisure provision.

Smaller sites - ranging from 1,082 to 23,320 sq ft - are currently being marketed.

Real estate company Savills and Keygrove Chartered Surveyors have been chosen by Centenary Quay Limited to market the space.

Chris Bickle, director in the licensed leisure team at Savills, said: “This is the perfect space for a retail or leisure operator to capture and service customers from the City and the wider Central South region.”

The units can be customised to suit demand and are provided to ‘shell and core’, meaning that just the basic structure of the unit has been built.

This makes the space more versatile and means the interior design details, such as furnishings and light fixtures, can be individual to the occupant.

It will also feature a 300-space underground car park with stairwell and lift access.

Director of Keygrove, Lauren Udall said: “We are delighted to launch this space at Centenary Quay which is a great opportunity to reinvigorate the wider scheme.

"The space was originally constructed to accommodate a supermarket and can now be configured to provide different unit sizes.”

Businesses that have already claimed a place in the development include Snap Fitness, Mettricks Café, Quayside Bar & Dining and Vivid Beauty. The headquarters for the award-winning marine robotics company Ocean Infinity is also nearby.

More than 1,000 homes have been given the go ahead for construction in the area, with another 164 awaiting confirmation.

Morrisons axed plans for a store at the development in February after three years of delays.

Crest Nicholson is behind the £500m Centenary Quay scheme. It includes a 27-storey tower - the centrepiece of the 1,620-home development.
