THE Bear of Burton, the charming country pub retreat close to the Hampshire Dorset border, has hosted its inaugural teddy bears' picnic.

More than 50 children and their teddy bears enjoyed tasty treats at the stunning Fuller's venue at Burton, near Christchurch.

The event was in support of Julia’s House, the local charity offering respite and care for long-term and terminally ill children and their families.

Families enjoyed a picnic, face-painting, pass the parcel, teddy biscuit icing and a raffle.

General Manager Tania Cook said: "It was such a fantastic day and the perfect way for local children to start the Easter Holidays. Everyone had such a great time and it was lovely to hear the pub ringing with the sound of delighted children – and their much quieter teddies!

"Julia’s House is an amazing charity – and it was a nice way to raise money. I’m looking forward to an even bigger event next year and I’m really hoping that more local schools and playgroups will come along. Who knows how big it could get? The record for the world’s largest teddy bears’ picnic is over 33,000 teddy bears – so I’ve got a long way to go. But we all have to start somewhere!"

Pantomime comes to the pub on Wednesday (April 12) in the form of Mother Goose. The show starts at 3pm and kids can go for free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.

Then on Friday June 9, the pub will be hosting a production of the Jane Austen classic Sense & Sensibility.

The Bear of Burton, which regularly hosts live music sessions, also offers delicious food, a relaxed bar and restaurant, and sun-soaked courtyard.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the local countryside before hibernating in one of ten beautiful bedrooms.

The porridge is never too hot, nor too cold at The Bear of Burton. They have breakfast, lunch and dinner options for all with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Sunday lunches are particularly popular with mummy and daddy bears and baby bears.
