ONE of Hampshire's finest country houses, set in 7.5 acres and with a rich history, is being sold for £3.65 million.

Grade II listed Penton Park also boasts extensive park and woodland, nine bedrooms, a two bedroom lodge, a wine cellar and over 17,000 sq ft of accommodation.

Penton Park, which is on the edge of the Test Valley village of Penton Mewsey, two and a half miles from Andover, dates from the early 19th Century.

It was once the country seat of the master builder William Cubitt. He and brother Thomas are famed for building much of Pimlico and Belgravia in London. William later became Lord Mayor of London and MP for Andover. Thomas built parts of Buckingham Palace.

The Cubitts renovated the property, formerly a hunting lodge, adding the wings. It was requisitioned as a recuperation hospital for US airmen during World War II and then became a boarding school for much of the 20th century.

The current owners, the Rolfe family, have been at Penton Park for 20 years, transforming it to provide an events venue, a base for their daycare centre for adults with disabilities James’s Place, and a magnificent multi-generational family home.

Much of the work has been undertaken by Guy Rolfe, who has an extensive background in heritage restoration and has worked on Crown Estate property in central London, many listed buildings and the expansion of the Tate Modern.

The extensive gardens and grounds include terraces, lawns, a kitchen garden, former tennis court, woodland and outbuildings. In addition to the main house is two-bedroom West Lodge, which has a private garden and parking.

James’s Place, which now supports 40 people, will move to a site one and half miles away, which previously housed Hatherden School.
